Mission & History
For more than 35 years, the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation has worked alongside our community to ensure that every person in the Lompoc Valley has access to quality healthcare — close to home.
What started as a vision shared by a small group of community leaders has grown into a $6.7 million legacy of impact: new facilities, lifesaving equipment, expanded programs, and a healthcare system that continues to grow because of people like you.
Official Mission Statement
For the development, operation and maintenance of healthcare facilities, programs, and services through the procurement and extension of financial aid toward the operation, maintenance and modernization of facilities for the Lompoc Healthcare District. To assure that the greatest amount of hospital services may be extended to the greatest number of persons served by the Lompoc Healthcare District. Programs shall be established for educational programs that will foster improved health for the citizens of the Lompoc Healthcare District. The Foundation will provide the means to assess and determine community health care needs; to state them realistically; to formulate plans to obtain these objectives; and to encourage public interest, acceptance, and support of specific projects necessary to achieve the organization's purpose.
Our Story
1990 — Founded With a Vision
The Lompoc Hospital District Foundation was established in 1990 by Alice Milligan and a dedicated group of community leaders who believed that philanthropy could transform local healthcare. From the very beginning, the Foundation set out to bridge the gap between what the hospital could fund through public resources and what the community truly needed.
1990s — First Capital Campaign
Through the Foundation's first capital campaign, the community raised funds to support major expansions to Lompoc Hospital's emergency department — including room renovations, new bed purchases, and critical capital improvements. This campaign set the standard for what community-driven healthcare philanthropy could achieve in the Lompoc Valley.
2005 — Measure E and a New Hospital
In 1995, California Senate Bill 1953 mandated that all acute care facilities meet new earthquake safety standards. Retrofitting the existing hospital would have cost more than $10 million. The LVMC Board of Directors chose instead to build a new, state-of-the-art facility.
Measure E passed in September 2005, authorizing $74.5 million in bonds for construction. But bonds could only pay for the building itself. The Foundation stepped up to fund what bonds could not — purchasing the land and leading a $4 million capital campaign to fully equip and furnish the new hospital.
Today — 35 Years of Impact
Over more than three decades, the Foundation has donated more than $6.7 million to Lompoc Valley Medical Center. Today, with over 4,400 members and a Board of Trustees of nearly 70 community volunteers, the Foundation funds capital improvements, community health education, and vital programs across the Lompoc Valley.
Right now, we're leading the campaign to open the new Lompoc Health – Village Center in Vandenberg Village — the next chapter in our shared commitment to keeping care close to home.
Non-Profit Status
When you contribute to the foundation you realize not only the personal satisfaction of supporting excellent health care initiatives but also gain a tax advantage.
Organized under the non-profit public corporation laws of the state of California, the Foundation has a 501 C3 tax-exempt status under the internal revenue code Tax ID#770 262 454. This means that The Foundation is recognized by federal and state governments as a charitable non-profit organization, therefore, all gifts are tax-deductible to the extent they do not exceed the contribution limitations of the tax laws.
